Mineral Archaeology in Sierra Almagrera

In 1838 a seam of silver was discovered in the Sierra Almagrera. Full scale exploitation was underway by 1860 and by 1890 there was a mining railway between Bedar and Garrucha. It was a splendid epoch for the area. Intensive mining continued until WW1, after which the industry entered into a period of crisis , which led to the closing of all mines. Nowadays the mines are sometimes used as film locations.
